CHANGE IS NECESSARY
This concept motion design aims to visualise the ideas discussed in an extract from “Change is Necessary”. A talk by Sarah Ichioka, who advocates for regenerative design and biomimetic practices. Biomimicry is an approach to design that looks to emulate nature to solve human problems, with regenerative design being the practice of designing with zero negative environmental impact whilst improving the health of ecosystems at the same time. This visualisation is done by utilising a biomimetic link between the uses of orange peels in both natural and artificial settings.
CONCEPT DETAIL
CHANGE IS NECESSARY
Pectin, a fibre found in fruit peels, being the key ingredient for this link. Natural barricading properties allowing for the protection of fruit inside, this can also be used artificially in the creation of medicine and bandages. Both the natural and non-natural applications being for the protection and health of the object, or person/animal, that it surrounds. With this research-led idea, a series of short motion graphics were developed to examine this concept. Initial feedback received noted that the peel concept explained the contents of the talk well, however the aesthetic style still needed improvement along with a better clarity of message.
CONCEPT REASON
CHANGE IS NECESSARY
A 9:16 aspect ratio was chosen as the majority of our audience would be viewing on mobile phones, via social media. With more and more time spent on these, this was the most appropriate ratio to test. One of the main, if not the main, points of “Change is Necessary” discusses how a change in perspective and opinion of wider society is important and how to do this - there was initially no obvious demographic to target. After further research a target audience was defined, experienced professionals in design based industries. As this group is most likely to have the agency to make the desired change.
The two moodboards below: left containing imagery relating to biomimetic and regenerative design concepts alongside other themes mentioned in “Change is Necessary”, with the right side displaying examples of motion and still imagery that make use of similar shapes to the ones planned for this motion design.
CONCEPT DEMOGRAPHIC
CHANGE IS NECESSARY
Following a process of research to ideation and experimentation then back, this conceptual design has so far evolved to visualise relatively new and complex ideas to a suitable audience. In a way that shows a real world example of biomimicry, whilst at the same time helping to introduce the regenerative design approach that biomimicry relates to.
With a lesson on the importance of aesthetic experimentation early on being learnt, to ensure a more refined and effective motion graphics sequence can be achieved. Alongside how difficult it can be to design for a more complex concept and how to navigate this, understanding that not everything learnt about these new topics will need to be presented. However the more knowledge of the subject, the better.
